BAH! Who would want to get this very pretty movie on DVD? :p

Talking a "blu" streak there, eh buddy?  wink

I'll still pick up DVDs to share with families and friends who haven't yet made the jump to HD.  At first I thought including a DVD copy as a pack-in with Blu-ray movies was a pointless business model, but it's actually perfect for consumers like myself.  Coraline had it, and thankfully, Up will as well.

DVD Beaver has their BR review of Star Trek up, by the way.  And Blu-ray.com has an excellent one on Up.

I like my Blu-ray! :p

Speaking of Coraline, I watched it the other week and really enjoyed it. I never knew Teri Hatcher could be so creepy... neutral

If you ask me, Blu-Ray is still somewhat little more than a status symbol - you get it only if you have the $$$ to spare...as if you were having trouble finding things to spend your $$$ on.

Otherwise, if you're poor, chances're you still at least have DVD; hardly even the elderly  and country folk I know use VHS anymore...

Agreed, but it's those early adopters that eventually drive the price down for those of us who watch and wait. However, in the end, when BluRay becomes the standard, no one is going to care "how long" you've been buying the format - as a status symbols it's not going to last like a expensive car would.

And there are some good movies for good prices out there, I saw "Terminator 2" and "The Usual Suspects" on BluRay for $10. I wouldn't buy them again, but fo those that don't have them they are totally worth picking up.

I don't particularly agree with this sentiment.  Two things: First, the majority of folks who say things like this, more often than not, haven't had nearly enough exposure to the format to fully appreciate the differences between it and DVDs.  Assuming you have the proper setup and equipment to take advantage of BR, even non video/audiophiles should be able to note vastly significant improvements on choice releases.  (I say "choice" releases, because there have been several titles where differences between DVD and BR are little to none.)   This isn't meant to be an elitist comment, but experiencing the comparisons firsthand could be enough for one to further understand the cost benefits of BR.

Second, as mentioned earlier in the thread, we've now reached a point where the prices between Blu-ray and DVD titles are almost negligible.  Spending another buck or three on a new BR release instead of its two-disc DVD deluxe edition counterpart is hardly extravagant spending.  And from a value-based standpoint, a Blu-ray release usually offers more bang for the buck in terms of additional features and goodies.

That said, I agree that Blu-ray itself is still very much a premium commodity.  Gaining entry (a player, HDTV, audio setup) is undoubtedly the most difficult hurdle, but all other factors on equal footing, the format does make a compelling case as being more than simple status flaunting.  For film lovers, the better picture and sound quality is something to admire, and title releases will no longer break the bank any more than if you were buying a standard DVD.

You're comparing a non-standard, multi DVD release to a standard Blu Ray release; if you were to compare the standard one disc version of a DVD to the Blue Ray release there would be a much wider gap in price. To those that don't care about special features (really, just give me the movie) and want to stick to the basic package shelling out for the Blu Ray solely for the boost in picture probably isn't aluring enough to make them convert formats.

Not so much more, really.  Just look at Up, G.I. Joe, and the upcoming Inglourious Basterds and The Hang Over.  Although, I concur: single-disc releases like Star Trek is a definite exception, as are Half-Blood Prince, Terminator Salvation, and District 9.

Finally picking up Mushihimesama Futari Original Soundtrack and Espgaluda II Original Soundtrack at Cave Maturi if ever possible. sad  If not, I might be still able to get them at the upcoming Cave Maturi hold in December with a possible release of deathsmile II Original Soundtrack.

Xavier: Renegade Angel Seasons 1 & 2 came out today; I'll probably just wait until the holidays to get it though. None of the local Wal-Marts seem to be carrying it and I'm sure f.y.e going to charge twice what amazon's selling it for. $30 for a show w/episodes that are 10 minutes long is a no-go for me.

Edit: Actually, back from town and I was able to score Xavier about the price Amazon was welling it for, but I TOTALLY forgot that George Carlin's Memior "Last Words" also came out today, so I nabbed that as well.

A heads-up for those looking to buy "Up".  While Target is advertising the Blu-ray for $26.99 this week, people are reporting that it's actually ringing up $19.99 at the register.  I myself just purchased it, and it's definitely legit; the receipt states "BD Up - Saved $15.00 off $34.99).

For those who care about such things, Target also includes an exclusive 150 page "My Adventure Journal" pack-in as a bonus. (For the 2-Disc Deluxe and Blu-ray editions only.)

I went for the 4-disc copy of Up on Amazon for $19.99.  It comes with the blu-ray, DVD, and other stuff so I'm happy.

got the new Pro Evolution Soccer for PS3 few days ago. good stuff, but i still suck online.

Joined in the online Cave Maturi craze for the first time, and it was a whirlwind of server down as I had always heard. Successfully ordered Mushihimesama Futari Original Soundtrack and Espgalude II Original Soundtrack, nonetheless. Actually, I'm pissed off about Cave charging about 1000 Yen for each purchase mad , but it seems quite lucky to get Espgaluda II since it sold out within the first 10 minutes (while Mushihimesama is still there). Gonna attend the upcoming offline Maturi next month and hopefully can pick up other missing releases and, if announced, deathsmiles II soundtrack (apparently the final update was released the other day and some music was added).

So you pay an extra 1000 Yen on top of each disc purchase? Sounds like a sweet deal to me; compared to paying deputy/YJA markup sad.

Let's add a METALLIC BLUE DSi to my November purchases now that a bundle containing it is finally confirmed for North America.  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile

damnit,, i envy you for having time to play new games.. i don't even have time to finish ones i started years ago.. I hate having to keep my GDMFing fedex day job in addition to our dollstore. the combined number of hours put every week is killing me,, i want to scream sometimes... instead i have to bide my time another year and a half until we buy a place in the AZ desert...

By Pellasos (Nov 14, 13:21) (#43)

bought Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires on a whim. i think that's plenty for this month.

Warp speed to Amazon; they just dropped the price of Blu-ray Star Trek to $19.99.

A heads-up similar to "Up" from last week.  Looks like Target has yet again misprinted their advertisement of the Blu-ray edition of Star Trek.  $24.99 is what their circular states; $19.99 is the price ringing up at the store register.

Keep in mind that this is for the regular Blu-ray edition, and not the Target-exclusive USS Enterprise case one.

Blu-Rays are horribly overpriced, those should be normal prices at the most.
