Muramasa: The Demon Blade

By Idolores (Sep 06, 2009) (#26)

Regardless of these flaws, and indeed, because of them, I'll be picking this up first day. Hunt and collect gameplay for the blades? Beautiful art and music? It's been hailed by IGN as a return to 2D form with a few RPG elements thrown in. They cite that it has a fair bit of backtracking, but that kind of thing has never bothered me . . .

This game is going to molest me.

Wasn't it already released by the time this post was made?
Haven't started it yet (was catching up on RE4 instead), but the wallscroll preorder bonus is gorgeous.

Select Gamestop stores have been selling it since Friday.  The official street date is September 8th.

I wished I'd made it to the Nintendo World Store launch event here on Saturday, if just for the free swag (the tattoos sound boss!), and seeing how they "transformed the store into feudal Japan with authentic lamps, art, plastic samurai swords, etc".

Huh, wasn't aware of that. A quick wikipedia search states that there are Gamestops in Canuckistan, but I've never, ever seen one, and I'm not entirely sure if EB Games will be carrying it early. Regardless, I don't have funds until the 8th, so it's a moot point anyways.

I picked it up on Friday with the freebie poster thing, but I haven't had time to play it yet.  Will let you know what I think when I do.

Just loaded up the game. Stylistically, it's like Okami had sweet, sweet sex with Odin Sphere, and then whichever game was the female in that little union gave birth to Muramasa.

Gameplay is really smooth. Fights are frenetic, yet smooth and fast-paced, like ZOE, only 2D and with a greater emphasis on scoring combos. About the only thing I take issue with is the mapping of the jump command to the up direction on the control stick. I've never favoured that style of control and wish it were one of the face buttons

How's the music?

By Idolores (Sep 09, 2009) (#33)

Deep, meditative, strong ethnic flavor so far. Perhaps to the significantly trained ear, certain aspects of Sakimoto's style will leak through, but to me, this sounds so far beyond the scope of his usual work that I couldn't tell and had to triple check his discography to make sure. Sure enough, he was handed composing duties. There's some good stuff here.

So, how about that OST release, guys? smile

PS: Major kudos to Ignition for keeping in the original Japanese audio track. This game would've felt so weird dubbed.

Six Basiscape members (Iwata, Kaneda, Abe, Kamikura, Chiba and Kudo) assist Sakimoto though. Both MMV and Basiscape have a survey form to send our wishes for a soundtrack release.

BIG EDIT:  the composer guess above generally turns out wrong!

I didn't see a survey on the Basiscape site, I think this link is it on the MMV site.  (Question 5, one of the checkboxes is for Soundtrack).

The latest column of Basiscape has a questionnaire and the second last form is to tell what we wish be released or reprinted. I don't know whether it would ever make an effect on them or not, but who knows. This and Opoona are their very soundtracks that deserve more limelight.

So I've got a story of bitter disappointment, and surprising success!

I went to pick up my pre-ordered copy of Muramasa at GameStop today, and the guy pulls out a disc and says "Lemme get that case for ya."  f--- that.  I said, "Oh no.  I'm getting a sealed copy."  To which he replied "This is our last copy."  RAGE  "Gimme my $5 back for that pre-order.  Do you at least have the fold-out poster which was supposed to be guaranteed because I pre-ordered it?"  "Sorry, gave it out to one of our customers."  FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU----

Needless to say I drove away very upset and proceeded to call a couple of other Gamestops to see if they had a sealed copy and the poster.  None of them did, of course, so I drove to one around the corner where a guy named Tim works.  He was transferred from one near my house, so we know each other.  He hooked me up with a sealed copy and that spiffy little poster!  I'm doing all my business there from now on.

Yes, I am that guy.

What, that guy who gets what he deserves? I'm glad you stood up for yourself, man. Gamestop can go suck a hairy one.

So how is everyone liking it? I can't be the only one totally into it by now . . . .

My complaints with the controls have been silenced, once I started looking at the fighting as just a fancy, yet simple fighting game, the decision to map the jump to up on the D-pad doesn't bother me so much anymore.

The music is really, really nice. Cedille, you said that, like, six other people helped with this? That makes a lot more sense than just Sakimoto doing all the work, considering how rich the score is.

I also notice what seems to be a progressive difficulty. Random battles that used to end in seconds with little to no damage often now see me having my swords broken in combat, an occurrence that normally was reserved for challenging boss fights. Confidence bred from the defeat of weaker enemies is the surest and quickest path to defeat . . . .

How did you know who composed which tracks?

I just guessed it. Another post of mine in GAF explicitly mentioned no composer breakdown being available, and perhaps I should have copied and pasted it (especially considering how much my ears suck) tongue

I've only had time to play through the first boss on Monohime's quest.  So far, I'd say it's just ok.  Graphics are fantastic, but gameplay hasn't drawn me in yet.  When I have time, I'll play some more and see if it grows on me.

As I get deeper into the game, a variety of musical flavours present themselves. In particular, the rockin' battle themes stand out. That ethnic touch I mentioned is still present in all forms, but I'm noticing a lot more variety now. It's not the traditional work that Okami was, for example, but the same heart and soul is present. big_smile

That's what I always say.

No factory-sealed = No purchase.

They always make some bullshit excuse, that they unwrap the games to prevent theft, but...how does that prevent theft?!

If it's unwrapped, I could just as easily say that I brought it in as one of my own trade-ins. But if it was factory-sealed, they'd be hard-pressed not to notice that I was trying to unwrap it, then slip it in my bag with the rest of my trade-ins...

My guess is that they have one hell of an aversion to plastic...nevermind that would mean they should be allergic to the game cases themselves...

Those guys are eeediots.

Heh, game's encouraged you to read up on Sun-Tzu's Art of War, eh? big_smile

That was actually a paraphrased line I took from G Gundam. Go watch it, dammit!

Yeah, it's a nice feeling. Will you help me pray for Opoona?
