Noob question about PC Engine sounds

Is there any way to compose music and have it output(?) through the PC Engine sound bank? What program were PC engine music composers using when they wrote/arranged their tracks? I'm sure it has to do with the PC Engine sound chip in itself, but surely it's been emulated no? I know there are emulators for games but it's not what I'm talking about.
