Best Harry Potter movie?

Hard to say, but POA is very good.

The first one
The first one is tops because it does such a great job bringing you into the Potter world. The second one is good but drops out too much stuff, and the third one is junk (pacing is way too fast).By Angela (Dec 10, 2004)
Agreed on all points.
>The first one is tops because it does such a great job bringing you into the Potter world. The second one is good but drops out too much stuff, and the third one is junk (pacing is way too fast).Azkaban, in particular, really does feel like it could benefit from an extended or director's cut version of sorts. 140 minutes just isn't long enough to justify telling the story properly.

Azkaban by FAR
The first two just felt stale and like the studio felt pressured to "play it safe" and do nothing exciting at all. The third actually felt like REAL cinema, and not just a stereotypical "kid's movie." It also didn't hurt that it was based on my favorite of the books and I thought they did a nice job with Lupin, my favorite character.By Adam Corn (Oct 12, 2005)
Agreed - Azkaban
Funny, I just watched Azkaban for the first time last week. After being thoroughly underwhelmed by HP 1 and 2 I had no intention of continuing with the series, but the previews for HP4 look promising so I figured I would give 3 a shot. Those who have read the books may complain about Azkaban cutting out too much material, but the problem with HP1 and 2, besides as Qui-Gon Joe mentioned that they're completely kid movies, is that if you haven't read the books (like me) they reek of being cut-and-paste efforts, trying too hard to include various bits and pieces from the novels without maintaining a clear sense of pacing and flow. Whereas with Azkaban, for the first time in the series I felt as though I was watching a real fantasy movie. (Funny, the genre "real fantasy movie" hardly existed till LotR came along). Granted, the end of the movie, while exciting, does feel rushed, so I as well would be interested in seeing an extended version.

None of 'em.
I have my issues with all three movies. As stand-alone movies they weren't great, and as book adaptations they weren't great, either. I like the books a lot better.By Skylark (Dec 10, 2004)
Harry Potter should be banned from existence

Maybe...
The thing is, God knew that I had a purpose in life, so he didn't allow those thoughts to persist.I hold no resentment towards you. But, would you mind being mature about the conflict you share towards me and why? I understand several people have conflicts with me, and I'm not sure the entire reason. I feel that you have tension building up, and it may be due to a misunderstanding on either mine or your part.
So, I'd appreciate if you would be able to maturely express why you feel a hate towards me, instead of attacking me directly.
Thanks,

I'd say it's probably the whininess.
>The thing is, God knew that I had a purpose in life, so he didn't allow those thoughts to persist. So now that you've found religion and/or friends, will we have respite from the "Come quickly, O Death" routine?
By Skylark (Dec 11, 2004)
Definitely

If you're not going to elaborate...
...then why are you even bringing it up?By Skylark (Dec 10, 2004)
I guess me and my friends honestly have no idea what's so great about it at all. We don't understand why so many people like it. We've actually analyzed the concepts and storylines with one of my friends who did like it and we honestly still could not figure out why.
I can understand that people like different types of material, but I do not understand why this particular series draws the most people.
I don't believe in using the term "overrated", but I don't understand what's so great about it. Those people should take a chance to read some actual fantasy novels and I think they'll understand how much inferior Harry Potter is.
P.S. Did you know there was seriously books called "Larry Potter" that came out before Harry Potter and the kid on the cover looks just like Harry Potter... lol

Well, let's see...
>I guess me and my friends honestly have no idea what's so great about it at all. We don't understand why so many people like it. We've actually analyzed the concepts and storylines with one of my friends who did like it and we honestly still could not figure out why.>
Here are my opinions, off the top of my head:
1. Excellent characters and characterization, at least of the main chars. Hermione is the brain and law-abiding one; Ron is somewhat insecure and wanting to prove himself while struggling with school; Harry wrestles with the memory of parents he's never known and events around him that he doesn't understand or isn't being told of, yet affect him intimately. Draco Malfoy is the stuck-up rich boy who shares his parents evil ways.
2. Good mix of the "good vs evil" metaplot and the "growing up and going to school" experience. One does not overshadow the other. Harry's "fighting evil" at the same time he and his friends struggle with school. They groan about tests, unfair teachers, and mounds of homework as they stumble upon and solve the mysteries of Hogwarts, the wizarding world, and Voldemort.
3. Good mix of mystery, action, seriousness, humor, and, as the series goes on, romance.
4. The richness and detail of this whole imagined wizarding society. The way wizards communicate, their money, the magical creatures and contraptions, even racism as some "purebloods" snub Muggles and half-breeds. You have well-developed chars interacting within a well-developed world.
5. And, of course, the main character himself. The situation created for Harry makes him one of the most complex, troubled and most interesting characters I've ever encountered in a book. The mysteries surrounding Harry's early life are slowly revealed, and connections are made with other characters we've met. And he's not a "goody two-shoes" or a perfect guy, either. Harry, for all his fame, is humble, and he's still human -- he has his flaws, he stumbles as he tries to do what he thinks is right, he gets moody as he enters adolescence.
The series is ultimately tragic -- each book ends on a positive note, yet that joy is temepered by an underlying something that the reader can't quite define but that becomes clearer as the series goes on. This is a sad coming-of-age story -- Harry escapes one brutal family life only to be thrust into another world in which just as much trouble awaits him, and it could end up costing his life. I can't imagine being a kid and having to go through all that; heck, it's hard for ADULTS to handle such changes, how much more worse is it for a child?
For me, that's why I love the series.

Yeah, people flock to watered-down franchises...
I'm surprised so many people actually gave the Lord of the Rings Trilogy its due. I wouldn't be surprised if half the people who have seen it have no clue what's going on anyways."Swords and midgets? Special FX? I'm there."
By Amazingu (Dec 11, 2004)
That's all fair and well...
But does your opinion justify the outcry to have him 'banned from existence'?Being mature is not something that only happens to other people you know?
