Complete sounds of katamari (2-CD set)

By American Nightmare (Jan 04, 2006)

OK, I've never played the first KD game and only just started playing the sequel, We Love Katamari. I instantly fell in love with the music so I ordered this 2-CD set [COCX-33517], which I received yesterday. The first disc seems to be a 'best-of' compilation of sorts, with original BGM and a couple of songs from different KD games [including my favorite track from WLK, 'Starlight Jamboree']. The second disc, however, is almost completely orchestral, including some Tchaikovsky pieces!?!?

My question is, what relation does this orchestral music have to Katamari Damacy? Is it used in any of the games? Are these orchestral 'arrangements' of preexisting KD tunes?

GMR [link below] provides a bunch of info about this release, but doesn't answer my questions regarding the source of the orchestral tracks on disc 2. Anyone have any clues?

Re: Complete sounds of katamari (2-CD

Going by the tracklists and comparing it to my Katamari Damacy OST, I'd say you're right that the 1st disc is a "selection" of music from KD1 and KD2 that Namco produced. Much of KD1's soundtrack is not on your set, probably because it had music by non-Namco music artists, and Namco either didn't or couldn't get permission for that music.

I don't know anything about the 2nd disc, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the OST to the PSP KD game that will be out in Japan soon.

I had the same thought...

...about the 2nd disc being the BGM from the PSP game, but would they really record a full-on orchestral album for a PSP game? I mean, these tracks are performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra w/choral accompaniment! Besides, it's so 'moody' that it hardly seems like music fit for a KD game...more like an epic fantasy RPG or something.

I don't know...

I don't have the soundtrack to the 2nd KD game, only the first (because after playing both games, I prefer the music in the 1st game more)

However, after comparing the 2nd KD's tracklist to your album tracklist, I speculate that some tracks are just extras. Super Taiko Damacy is probably a take on their taiko drumming series.

I image you're referring to this

Check out the link, yo!

So look as if your assumptions were correct

Eureka.

By playing more of the game I was able to answer my own question. It appears that the orchestral tracks feature the music from each of the chapter 'cut-scenes' from We Love Katamari. Ahh...another mystery solved.

So the second disc is all from WLK then?

Not quite sure since I haven't played the 1st game

For all I know, some of these orchestral tracks might also be on the first KD game. I kind of doubt it, though, since all of the music seems to have a 'continuous' sound and was recorded by the same musical ensemble. If the orchestral tracks were from two different games [KD and WLK], I would assume that they'd have a bit more variety of sound and theme, but they all sound as if they were cut from the same cloth, so to speak.

BTW, the second disc also contains a few 'incidental' music tracks, such as the background sounds [birds chirping, children playing, etc.] from the 'map' screen in WLK.

About the music from the PSP version, there are a couple of tracks on the first disc that utilize the main themes from KD but sound more like 16-bit SNES music. I assume that this is the BGM from the upcoming PSP game.

P.S. I should also point out...

...that the second disc features the full-length orchestral pieces as they were recorded in studio, rather than the abbreviated snippets that are heard in-game, which makes for a much for worthwhile listening experience IMO. Some of the tracks are quite long and operatic in nature [my wife pointed out that in some places the music sounds reminiscent of Madame Butterfly], while others sound kindsa like BGM from an old school Warner Bros. cartoon. So when's the Katamari Damacy Live Concert series coming to town? That'd be sweet. ;-]
