Doujin albums are a small niche within what's already a niche market. I hardly expected this article to delve into the subject. This installment's less offensive than the last one, but it's rather dull. I'm not the target audience for this stuff though. I think it serves as a decent enough introduction to the subject for readers who aren't aware this sort of thing exists.

Bleh...
That about sums it up.The thing with doujins though...A good number of VGM fans (nevermind whatever the guy writing these things qualifies as) don't know about them. I wasn't expecting them to be in there and much to my not-so-lofty expectations, they're not.
Besides, he'd have a hell of a time explaining the only way to get them is from niki's FTP or someone sharing them on VGMCentral. :p
I had a decent run with OCR, but I think I came away with maybe 20 total arrangements I kept. I bought the Advantage CD, but I listened to it a few times and shelved it because it was basically a bunch of poor sound upgrades. Only other album that deserved more than a look was the Mitsuda Tribute and moreso for a select few arrangements (read: Ailsean's) than anything else.
I think if this guy were familiar with Preludio, Mintjam, Toshinori Hiramatsu/Crow's Claw, Woodsoft, Serenade, Akineko and Hellion Sounds, this article would have been slanted a tad differently...These guys are so far ahead of most our own country's remixers, it's not funny (and I'm not saying that to be mean either...Most of these easily beat out some of my favorite "official" arrangements and are generally good enough to stand alone as well, when I'm not familiar with the original. This happens a lot...).

Enough Bitching and Mehing
Most of the ppl that write these articles have a limited knowledge on the subject, do varying amounts of research, and or have a one sided opinion about it. Much like how you wouldn't expect a guy in Japan writing about vgm to really gaf about the Minibosses or c64. There's a general lack of perspective. We as fans of vgm on the other had do have perspective (or i hope we do); and can do something about it.The "Fan" in a sense is the biggest promoter, ambassador, and educator of he or she's interests. And at least half of you guys could be considered somewhat experts in vgm. Just get together, write and submit our own articles. Many here could represent the other side of the coin, or even both sides much better than some lazy editor on the net.
And writing articles isn't hard. Many ppl get paid to do it and do it quite poorly even. Being vgm is our or is one of our passions; composing a paragraph or two should be easy.

If CT BoT sucks, I need to stop listening to music.

I actually read all of this...
...and was pretty impressed.I think it's kinda neat how Mathew Valente (tssf) got a lot of recognition. :) I guess he's more famous than he realizes.
It was a well-written, informative article.
Of course, the really crazy niche stuff was left out, like Japanese doujin releases, but come on, I think this series of articles was mainly about how game music awareness is on the rise in America, not how it already has quite a hold in Japan.
Two thumbs up. :)
By Carl (Aug 29, 2005)
It could have been written 4 years ago though.
Yeah it's decent info for beginners and people just getting into the scene, but most everything contained in that article is already 3~4 years old and should have been written THEN if it was to capture the "current" times.By dma (Aug 30, 2005)
Indeed
These days the top "non-japanese" arrangements come from VGMix top stuff and Dwelling of Duels winners...By Drunkbeard (Sep 04, 2005)
Not well known, yet....
I didn't really find much about the doujin market until recently myself, so I'm not surprised there isn't much on this yet. As with how VGM has gained popularity until now, the actual goods will take some time to gain popularity. And hey, for all the doujin fans, you're just a bit more 1337 now, aren't ya? :)
